뉴스 클러스터링의 필요성

1. 요즘 보면 다양한 뉴스를 접하기는 참 쉬워졌다.
대부분의 포털들이 각 신문사의 기사들을 취합해서 보여주고 있으니 말이다.

그렇지만 역설적으로 다양한 기사를 보기에는 쉽지 않다. 포털 뉴스를 접하다 보면 화면 우측에 있는 인기 뉴스를 자주보게 되고, 그곳에 있는 기사들을 다보면 마치 그날의 뉴스를 다본것 같은 착각이 든다. 그리고 다른 기사는 별 중요한 기사가 아닌 것 같은 생각이 든다. 그러나 그건 단지 인기있는 뉴스 일 뿐이다.
그래서 다양한 기사들을 보려면 노력을 좀 기울여야한다. 뉴스 서비스 페이지의 각 카테고리 메뉴별로 클릭해서 화면 상단부터 하단까지 꼼꼼히 읽어야한다. 그렇게 하더라도 신문사, 카테고리 등등의 분류가 많아 빠뜨리는 기사가 꽤 많을 것이다.

2. 어떤 보고서에 따르면 구글 뉴스 방문객의 44%가 제목만 읽는다고 한다.

이에는 다양한 이유가 있겠지만 뉴스가 너무 많고, 비슷한 기사들도 너무 많은 것이 그 이유 중에 하나가 아닐까라는 생각이 든다.
이럴때 현재 나오는 기사들이 주제별로 정리되어있다면 그 정리된 제목들만 가지고도 뉴스의 흐름을 알 수 있지 않을까? (물론 포털들에서 정리를 하고는 있지만 단지 중요한 몇몇 이슈들에 대해서 사람의 손으로 하고 있다. 이것은 기사의 누락 및 편집 의견 개입이 가능하다는 것이다.)


이런 측면들에서 생각해보면 뉴스 클러스터링은 상당한 강점이 있는 것 같다. 시간이 흘러가면서 발생하는 다양한 이슈를 어떤 성향(신문 저작자, 신문 편집자, 포털 관계자, 독자 모두)의 개입 없이 다양하게 기사들을 주제별로 묶어주니 말이다. (물론 의도적인 개입이 불가능하지는 않다.)
